Pine Essential Oil – A Christmas Icon with Benefits

Pine essential oil is distilled from the needles and twigs of the Pine tree, commonly recognized as the traditional Christmas tree. Identified as Pinus Sylvestris as its scientific name, the Pine tree also goes by Scots pine in the UK, Scotch pine in the US, European red pine, or Baltic pine. This gem originates from Eurasia – Western Europe to Eastern Siberia.

Yes, Siberia is part of Asia (if you didn’t know).

Apart from giving us our ideal white-Christmas vibes with a fine & fresh forest scent, the Pine tree has a lot more to offer than just fancy decor and furniture, especially when distilled into essential oil.

Here, we are going to look into what this “Christmas” tree essential oil can do!

Nature’s Healer

Warning: Avoid internal consumption & topical application around the eyes.

Known for its healing properties from its sprouts, needles, and bark; it yields antiseptic & beneficial properties for the respiratory system. It is commonly used to heal upper and lower respiratory tract swelling (inflammation), hoarseness, common cold, cough or bronchitis.

For a topical application for skin-related issues, dilute a few drops of Pine essential oil with some carrier oil (almond, jojoba, or coconut). Then proceed to apply it topically on the affected areas.

For those who prefer to use a bathtub, just add a few drops of Pine essential oil into some warm running water, then proceed to fully submerge yourself into the bath!

Note: Refer to this blog on how to disperse essential oil properly and safely in the bathtub.

Antibacterial Christmas Air Freshener

Pine is often sought after during the Christmas season due to its invigorating and uplifting aroma. However, it just doesn’t only create a welcoming atmosphere, but contains clearing effects that can help with the common cold! In fact, a study in 2004 shows that Pine essential oil is very effective for improving indoor air quality when diffused as it can inhibit the development of bacteria, yeast and fungi.

Besides diffusing, here’s a simple recipe to make your own air freshener spray

First, get a 125 ml PET plastic or glass spray bottle.

Then, combine 120 ml distilled water with 5 ml alcohol

Finally, mix it with 35 drops of Pine essential oil + 20 drops of Lavender essential oil + 20 drops of Tea Tree essential oil

Shake well before each use.

Natural Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Pine essential oil is well regarded for its use in household cleaning applications. In fact, there are many commercial cleaning products that come with a Pine scent. Instead of using the commercial products, create your own DIY multi-purpose cleaner without any side effects from harsh chemicals!

First, get a 250 ml PET plastic or glass spray bottle.

Then, combine 200 ml distilled water with 15 ml white vinegar and 15 ml liquid castile soap

Finally, mix it with 40 drops of Pine essential oil + 40 drops of Lemon essential oil.

And voilà! It’s now ready to be used and happy cleaning!

Pocket-Friendly Mental Health Care

Going back to nature helps individuals in achieving a balanced, grounded state of mind. However, concerns over covid-19 and travelling restrictions reduce the ability of city folks to go back to nature and to spend ample time in wooded areas.

Diffusing Pine essential oil while visualizing a walk through the forest can serve as a lovely substitute. Pine scent naturally contains clarifying, uplifting, and invigorating effects, which will help positively impact your mood and concentration.  This will help clear your mind of any stress and eliminate any mental fatigue, which can help boost concentration and energize your body as well!

From the examples listed above, Pine is not just one that is used for fancy decor during the Christmas season but also one that has many applications in our everyday life!
