Using Essential Oils To Keep Your Garden Healthy & Productive!

 

We’ve all heard of the amazing benefits of essential oils, but did you know that there are many uses for these oils beyond your home? Essential oils can be easily used to keep your garden healthy and productive.

Whatever you choose to use, ensure that the essential oils for the garden are those that are natural and organic. Avoid synthetic fragrance oils as these oils are may cause unwanted side effects especially if you’re growing vegetables or fruits for your own consumption!

Typically, you can add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to water to make your own water-based spray. Shake the bottle well before spraying and focus on spraying the leaves and stems of your plants. Allow the essential oil to sit on the plant for 10-15 minutes before you continue with the rest of your normal watering routine. Be careful when applying undiluted essential oils. If you apply too much, your plants may experience burning.

A few drops of citronella or geranium directly onto your soil will keep mosquitoes and ants away from your garden. The lavender essential oil contains linalool and linalyl acetate which are both antiseptic. Spraying lavender essential oil on your plants will stop the growth of fungi and bacteria and attract beneficial insects and even prevent termite infestation in wood without affecting the wood’s properties.

Eucalyptus essential oil is a great choice for pest control too. It is a natural insecticide and can be used to control a variety of pests, including ants, aphids, mites and cockroaches. It can also be used to control rats and mice and is a fantastic alternative to chemical pesticides.

Tea tree oil is another popular and effective product for fighting pests and insects in your garden. It can be used to kill ants, spiders, slugs, snails and moths. Tea tree oil can also be used to fight off fungi, bacteria and viruses. If you have a problem with a certain pest, you can mix tea tree oil with water and spray it on the affected area. It is safe to use around people and animals. Besides, it has a pleasant and refreshing scent!

Basil essential oil can be used to repel pests such as aphids and slugs and deter ants from foraging on your plants. Just dilute a few drops in water and spray over your plants.

Spray your plants when the sun is setting and when the weather is not too hot. It is best to spray once every other week for prevention purposes and more often if you are having a pest issue.
